When, and how, did you begin painting?
Ever since I was little, I enjoyed drawing and painting. If I think about it now, I think winning an art award hosted by a newspaper when I was in third grade was a tremendous impetus. Throughout my teenage years, I attended after-school art academies because I genuinely enjoyed the experience of working to produce art.

What trials and errors did you experience before finding your own style?
For a while, I followed a style typical for art students preparing for university entrance exams; then in university, I majored in interior design. I had no style of my own. Then right as I graduated university, I changed my mind and began preparing to go to graduate school in illustration. As I built up my portfolio, I began experimenting with lots of different materials and thinking about which medium was right for me. Since I only drafted interior floor plans throughout university, my skills in drawing and painting were clumsy. So I researched a lot, looking up artists that I liked, mimicking their use of materials and colors, and reading interviews.

In your view, what is the difference between art produced during school and art produced independently?
At university, there was a class that required me to produce interior perspective drawings or floor plans by hand. That was easy because I only had to follow the topics or concepts created by my professor. Independent work is difficult because you have to produce ideas on your own and requires a tremendous amount of persistence; but the advantage of it is that you can create whatever you want, however you want, until it suits you.

You seem to have a preference for gouache on paper, over acrylics or oil. Is there a particular reason why?
Originally, I liked to paint acrylicsβwhich goes on opaque, but with a sheenβon canvas. Right now, I chose paper because I was thinking about how to bring them back to Korea. Paper has lots of unique textures, which is fun, and the particular feeling of applying paint on paper and the subtle color changes that happen on paper are attractive, too. I like gouache because of its thick and smooth qualities. That is also why I prefer painting over digital work.

How did the change in environment from South Korea to Cambodia impact your work?
I came to Cambodia during a prolonged break from painting due to giving birth and looking after my kids. For a year or so, I lived the life of a true housewifeβmy kids were very young, we had to adjust to a new place, get used to the heat, and so on. Then from the onset of the pandemic in 2020, I needed something to pour my energies into since we couldnβt leave the house. The materials that are locally available here are very limited and often of poor quality, but I adjusted to my given conditions and began painting again. This was wonderful for me psychologically, because I was reminded of my freer student years. My life patterns became much simpler too, which gave me lots of time to paint. I also think the colors of the local landscape are reflected on my paintings.

Lots of artists have said that continuing to produce work is like a never-ending fight with ourselves. Within this fight, there are issues with envy, financial difficulties, and pressures of originality, among other factors.
Sure. Right now, I still have a strong desire to produce good work, but I have become less vulnerable to things like envy and competitiveness. I acknowledge where I fall short, if you will. I think the most important thing is not giving up, while continuing to improve your skills.

If you can offer a word of advice to young artists in the beginnings of their careers, what would it be?
I think itβs necessary to continue to experiment; take in good advice but make autonomous choices; meet a lot of different people; and take in nature, whenever possible.
